On May 12th 1914 Anne Jarvis’ mother died and many people mourned the loss. Her funeral was held and Anne wore a white carnation as a symbol of her love and a tribute to her mother. This custom of wearing carnations as a tribute to mothers developed over the years; red and pink carnations for living mothers and white for mothers who were no longer alive. What originally had begun as a day of honor then became a day to celebrate all mothers with cards, flowers and gifts and of course phone calls.
